Come learn about environmental issues and economic concepts while enjoying a beautiful setting in Irvington, Virginia.  The resort is tucked away on a private, lush peninsula in Virginia’s Northern Neck, bound by the Chesapeake Bay to the east, the Potomac River to the north, and the Rappahannock River to the south. The Tides Inn sits on a bluff overlooking Carters Creek in charming Lancaster County.

Middle and high school teachers will learn how to use economic principles to analyze environmental issues and examine how a rational, economic approach to the environment helps students understand the complexity of these issues.  Workshop facilitators demonstrate lesson plans and lead intellectually stimulating sessions.  The program includes a field trip to an environmentally challenging site.

Key topics covered in the Institute include:  marginal decision-making; scarcity; opportunity costs; incentives; role of profit; markets and prices; externalities; property rights; and tragety of the commons.

Except for travel to the program, all costs (including hotel and some meals) are covered for the teacher.  A $100 refundable deposit is required to hold your spot, but if you attend, your check is returned uncashed at the end of the program.

Space is limited, and the deadline for registration is March 1, 2010.  A copy of the application is attached here.

If you have any questions, call Suzanne Gallagher, Director of the VCU Center for Economic Education at 804-828-1628 or Page Ritter, VCEE at 804-828-1627.
