Teachers are a critical key to students gaining an understanding of basic economic principles and being financially literate. The Virginia Council on Economic Education believes that the best way to promote economic and financial literacy is to partner with local school divisions and teachers to ensure that young Virginians develop essential economic and financial knowledge and skills needed to thrive in our changing world.
Teacher education is the Council’s primary means for reaching students. Our goal is to partner with and assist teachers in building a solid understanding of basic economic principles and personal finance skills as well as ensuring that they recognize its importance and relevance for their students.
We assist teachers with resources that will enable them to creatively infuse the content into all curriculum, including math, civics, government, social science and business. We enable teachers to make economics relevant through engaging professional development, quality hands-on lessons, and statewide simulations where students flex their economic and financial muscle.
VCEE is committed to providing sustained professional development assistance to K-12 teachers in Virginia. To do so reaches thousands of students over the span of a teacher’s career. Visit the Teacher Workshop section to see the variety of professional development opportunities provided at all grade levels by VCEE’s affiliated university-based centers for economic education. These are made possible at little or no cost to Virginia’s teachers due to the generous financial support from VCEE’s supporters and partners -- businesses, foundations, individuals, universities, the Commonwealth of Virginia and local school divisions.
