This session will cover two broad themes: an introduction to the Economic Way of Thinking, and Entrepreneurship. The Economic Way of Thinking provides a powerful set of mental tools for interpreting the world. Economics is a way of thinking about choices—the choices that we make every day as citizens, workers, family members, and individuals. Economics teaches us how to think clearly when we face the problem of scarcity, and how to weigh the costs and benefits of our choices in an increasingly-complex world. Using these economic decision-making tools shows us how to take charge of our lives!

Entrepreneurship is about taking initiative. While everybody in the world makes use of natural, human, and capital resources to produce things, it is entrepreneurs who decide how those resources will be used. Students who understand the fundamentals of entrepreneurship are prepared to take advantage of life’s opportunities—to actively take charge of their futures.

This session is part of a series of in-class and out-of-class work designed to cover all of the economic concepts in the high school Economics and Personal Finance course. This session and its accompanying homework (6 hours in-person, and 8 hours homework) will compose 25% of the total series.

While particularly helpful for those teaching economics and personal finance, any teacher wanting to deepen their economic knowledge will find the institute beneficial.  Participants who successfully complete all six modules (42 hours) and pass a post-test will be recognized as a VCEE Certified Economics Educator: High School.   Other scheduled session:

5/3/2017, 4:00-7:00pm, Module 4 – Trade
6/22 and 6/23/2017, 8:30-3:30, Modules 5 & 6 – Macroeconomics, role of government, Federal Reserve System

Parking and lunch is provided.
