This session focuses on engaging students in decision making to increase their understanding of the United States economy.  The development of effective decision making is important in order for students to become better-informed citizens. Understanding the characteristics of the United States economy, which include limited government, private property, profit motive, markets, consumer sovereignty and competition, will help students evaluate economic decisions made in the marketplace.

This session will satisfy the requirements for Modules 1 & 2 of the Middle School Civics and Economics Institute which assists CE teachers with all the economic content in Virginia’s Standards of Learning and provides creative lessons and resources. Modules include: Economics is About Making Choices; Why Do We Need an Economic System?; How Our Economy Flows; Markets and Prices; How Does Government Relate to the Economy?; What is Globalization and How Does It Affect Me?; Banks and the Federal Reserve System; and How the Economy Affects You Financially.

Participants completing Modules 1-8 (24 instructional hours in class and six additional hours of assignments outside of class) and passing a test will earn recognition as a VCEE Certified Economics Educator: Civics & Economics.  Modules 3 – 8 will be held on the following dates:
