Inviting all guidance counselors, teachers, students, and parents! This 3-in-1 interactive webinar is designed to share hot topics Virginia Tech students majoring in Agricultural & Applied Economics (AAEC) study and begins with the talk, “The Diamond/Water Paradox: Applications to Real Life.” Award-winning professor Dr. Mike Ellerbrock will answer the question: If water is essential for life, and diamonds are not, then why do diamonds cost more than water? Solving this conundrum illustrates three key economic principles evident in everyday life: 1) cost and price are two different things; 2) everything in life exhibits diminishing marginal returns; and 3) value lies at the margin. Dr. Travis Mountain will then give a brief presentation on “Credit & Student Loans” to address the consequences nearly half of VT students who graduate with student loans experience. In addition to credit score ramifications, learning how to use this money effectively can greatly affect not only students’ current financial behavior, but their financial behavior long after they graduate. To wrap up the program, Mrs. Katie White, AAEC undergraduate academic advisor, and current VT student ambassadors will discuss the various AAEC majors (Agribusiness, International Trade & Development; Environmental Economics: Management & Policy; Community Economic Development; Food & Health Systems Economics, etc.), related future job opportunities, experiential learning programs, and other unique and valuable experiences available to future Hokies in AAEC. There will be time for Q&A after each presentation.
