This session focuses on engaging elementary students in decision making to increase their understanding of the new 2015 Economic SOL in Social Studies. The development of effective decision making is an important skill for students to become better-informed citizens. Interweaving teaching tools such as decision making charts will make learning fun and encourage students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers.

This session will satisfy the requirements for Module 1 of the K-3 Economics Institute which allows teachers to experience methods for teaching all of the K-3 elementary economics related Standards of Learning in a manner that is hands-on, effective, and fun. Designed to strengthen and deepen a teacher’s understanding of these concepts, it also provides a variety of resources ready for use in the classroom, including lessons, performance based assessments, and demonstrations linked to children’s literature, both classic and new.

Participants who complete Modules 1-4 (12 instructional hours) will be eligible for 12 recertification credits and recognition as a VCEE Certified Economics Educator: K-3.  Dinner will be provided.

Modules 2-4 are scheduled as follows:

Production: It’s Off to Work We Go! ( Module 2) – Tuesday, April 18, 2017 – (4:30 – 7:30 pm) – Lynchburg College

Everyday Economics:  When to Spend and When to Save (K-3 Modules 3 & 4) – Tuesday, June 13, 2017 (8:30  am – 3:30 pm) Lynchburg College
