Students need a balanced understanding of the foundations of government and the limited but crucial role government plays in supporting our economic system. Moreover, economics at its heart is about decision making: making choices about the best use of our limited resources. As students continue their education, their ability to make good decisions about saving and spending, and staying in school to develop the skills and knowledge that will make them productive citizens is invaluable.

The study of economics goes hand in hand with the study of civics in developing students into responsible and knowledgeable citizens and voters. This 4-day institute will equip middle and high school teachers with hands-on lessons and resources to teach economic concepts to their students.  Connections will be made to all of the economic content in the Civics & Economics Standards of Learning, as well as, many of the economic concepts in the high school Economics and Personal Finance course.  Modules include:

  • Economics is About Making Choices;
  • Why Do We Need an Economic System?;
  • How Our Economy Flows;
  • Markets and Prices;
  • How Does Government Relate to the Economy?;
  • What is Globalization and How Does It Affect Me?;
  • Banks and the Federal Reserve System; and
  • How the Economy Affects You Financially.

Participants completing the 4 instructional days in class and additional assignments outside of class will be eligible for 30 hours of recertification credits.  In addition, if they also pass the post-test they will be recognized as a VCEE Certified Economics Educator: Civics & Economics.

Participants receive a number of resources for use in the classroom including a Virtual Economics flash drive with over 1,400 activity-based lessons searchable by grade and topic, 51 key economic concepts, and a glossary with over 500 terms. ($160 value)
