Workshop Description

Econ in Your Backyard: Jobs in Rural Communities, Part 2

“What is the next step for job growth in our community?” What ways are there to empower women and small-scale farmers to manage natural resources? These sorts of questions challenge communities all across Virginia. In this webinar series we help teacher help students think about the economic future of their community, how to get a job in it, and how to lead it into the future. This is the second part of a two-part webinar series.

In this workshop, we investigate sustainable development in small communities across Virginia. Join us for a 90-minute webinar designed specifically for K-12 teachers on sustainable economic development through the lens of environmental economics. This interactive session will provide practical tools on how economic principles can be applied to address the challenges of developing sustainably, fostering a deeper understanding of the local economic opportunity. You will explore real-world examples, engage in hands-on activities, and receive resources to help your students think critically about the relationship between the local economy, environment, and opportunities. Empower your teaching and inspire the next generation!

This webinar is part of a two-part series. In this session, we will investigate the following questions:

  • “What is the next step for job growth in our community?”
  • How do we promote and finance pro-poverty programs (e.g., affordable safe housing, clean water, clean energy) to increase employment accessibility?
  • What ways are there to empower women and small-scale farmers to manage natural resources?
  • Creating opportunities through small business succession planning through apprenticeship and assisting entrepreneurship programs (e.g. Wytheville VA).

This is the first part of two-part webinar series. To register for this workshop, see below. To register for the one on October 30, click here.
