Students need a balanced understanding of the foundations of government and the limited but crucial role government plays in supporting our economic system. Moreover, economics at its heart is about decision making: making choices about the best use of our limited resources. Middle school students need to learn good decision-making skills. As they head into high school and post-secondary education, their decisions about saving and spending, and about staying in school to develop the skills and knowledge that will make them productive citizens, are critical.

This 4-day session assists CE teachers with all the economic content in Virginia’s Standards of Learning and provides creative lessons and resources. Modules include: Economics is About Making Choices; Why Do We Need an Economic System?; How Our Economy Flows; Markets and Prices; How Does Government Relate to the Economy?; What is Globalization and How Does It Affect Me?; Banks and the Federal Reserve System; and How the Economy Affects You Financially.

Participants completing the 24 instructional hours in class and six additional hours of assignments outside of class will be eligible for 30 hours of recertification credits and recognition as a VCEE Certified Economics Educator: Civics & Economics.   Participants receive a number of resources for use in the classroom including a Virtual Economics flash drive with over 1,400 activity-based lessons searchable by grade and topic, 51 key economic concepts, and a glossary with over 500 terms. ($160 value)   Lunch and refreshments provided.
