Workshop Description

Lesson Field Test: VCU Environmental Economics Class

I visited Evelyn Nunes’ ECON 325 class to field test a lesson I wrote on environmental economics. In this lesson, students do a simulation that tests three different ways of responding to a negative externality. The externality is “noise” and the students are producing “words” in a game like Charades or Catch-Phrase.

That is, they see how many words they can guess while trying to limit the amount of noise they create at the same time (measured with a cell phone deciblemeter). They test which method to limit noise and maximize production is best: Command and Control; Taxation; or Liability-plus-Bargaining.

One student reported: “That was fun… and I learned something!”
