If people dislike pollution, why do they pollute anyway? How do human choices affect Virginia’s environmental resources? How can we protect the environment without hurting vulnerable people? Environmental issues are often perplexing. The good news is that economic thinking – focusing as it does on human decision-making – can provide insight into how to think better about the environment.
This hybrid institute will be online and at VCU, with a field trip to Maymont (in partnership with Maymont’s premier environmental education team). Activities include interactive lesson demonstrations and outdoor science activities at the Maymont grounds. Attendees will get access to a collection of lessons that are aligned with both economics and science standards, and which give insight into human decision-making processes that affect the environment.
The price is free! Attendees get up to 18 contact hours for purposes of recertification. There will be two days in-person at Maymont, and an additional six hours of online, asynchronous learning. Parking, breakfast, snacks, and lunch are provided each day. Teachers also get lots of lesson plans and online resources to help bring learning to life both inside and outside the classroom.
Fee: NO CHARGE
Additional Information:
The online portion will be completed in the week of the institute, with work being due Friday, August 2.
