Grounded in research-based economics instructional practices, this 6-day (42 hours) professional development program is designed to equip teachers with the economics content knowledge and pedagogy needed to effectively teach economics in an accessible and practical way that ultimately empowers students. Teachers will learn how to translate economics content into life skills required of critically-minded citizens who make intelligent and productive decisions as employees, business owners, investors, consumers, and voters. The economics content, based on the Economics and Personal Finance course standards, will be taught by demonstrating classroom-tested, active-learning lessons relevant to students’ lives and recommended for classroom use. An emphasis will be placed on using economics to prepare students for democratic citizenship (e.g., understanding current events and casting informed votes) and to develop economics reasoning skills (e.g., cost-benefit analysis, decision-making models, and the “economic way of thinking” six principles). Multidisciplinary connections between economics and other subjects and grades as well as performance-based learning and assessments will also be highlighted and demonstrated.
Teachers will receive a wealth of student-centered instructional resources for teaching economics, including a Virtual Economics 4.5 flash drive ($160 value) that contains over 1,400 K-12 activity-based lessons in economics and personal finance. While this Economics Institute is geared toward economics instruction at the middle and high school level, elementary school teachers are encouraged to attend to also strengthen their economics content knowledge and instructional practices.
Teachers who successfully complete the entire Institutes and pass a test will earn the credentials of a VCEE Certified Economics Educator.
