Stock Market Game Winners in ODU Center for Economic Education Region Celebrated

Congratulations to the 2018-2019 Stock Market Game™ winners in the ODU Center for Economic Education region. Thank you to all who attended our award ceremony last night.

One of our participating teachers sent us a heartfelt note stating:

“….thank you for the wonderful opportunity that you have given our students to experience economics in such an exciting and meaningful manner. ALL of my students, including the students who didn’t place, loved the Stock Market Game! Most commented that there was SOOOOOO much that they didn’t know about trading, investing, saving and spending until they played. And they want to learn more! These are 4th and 5th graders!

I was very impressed with the training, materials, support and the user-friendly platform of the program itself. The students took to it like ducks to water and never looked back.

Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for your support and ongoing work with our students in their journey to learn about economics with this engaging game. We will be participating next year!”

Teachers: Please keep an eye on our Stock Market Game pages on our website, www.vcee.org to participate again next year.

We are so grateful to the supporters of the Stock Market Game™ program in Virginia including:

A special shoutout to Atlantic Union Bank as they supported Norfolk Public Schools’ participation in the Stock Market Game program and helped underwrite the ODU Center for Economic Education’s awards program and reception yesterday.

Teaching Students to “think like economists” as Democratic Citizen Preparation, Article Published by Dr. Cheryl A. Ayers

Dr. Cheryl A. Ayers, co-director of the Center for Economic Education at Virginia Tech which is part of the Virginia Council for Economic Education, has published another article in the top-tier, peer-reviewed Journal of Social Studies Research:  Teaching students to “think like economists” as democratic citizenship preparation.  View article here.

Expanding upon her practice-based theory of effective economics instruction, Dr. Cheryl A. Ayers’ latest research article takes an in-depth look at integrating economic reasoning skills across all subjects to better prepare students for democratic citizenship such as casting more informed votes, understanding current events, and discussing controversial issues while simultaneously cultivating more civil dialogue around opposing viewpoints and developing an accurate disciplinary understanding of economics.

In this article, Dr. Ayers examines “economic reasoning tools and citizenship preparation – by describing the instructional benefits, challenge, and practices of integrating greater disciplinary understanding in economics across all secondary social studies subjects”.The three Virginia “teachers in this study demonstrated specialized content knowledge in economics by teaching economic reasoning skills primarily geared toward citizenship preparation: namely, casting more informed votes, understanding current events, and discussing controversial issues. The most often taught economic reasoning tools were the EWT principles, PACED decision-making models, and cost-benefit analysis charts.”  The three teachers profiled in the article were former winners of the Virginia Council for Economic Education’s Outstanding Economic Educator Awards.

From the topics such as the Stock Market Game to the 2016 presidential election to the domestic abuse policies within the National Football League to the Eboli Virus to Entitlement Spending, Dr. Ayers provides real-world, real-classroom examples of innovative economic education focused on developing “critically-minded, reflective citizens”.
