Reading Makes Cents annual reading challenge encourages students to explore the concepts of scarcity, saving, work, money and many other topics tied to SOL concepts. • Earn three free books (with library binding) for your library. • Encourage your students to learn about money, making choices, and saving. • Reward students for reading. • Give students the chance to win a $529 college savings account from Virginia529.

We are the Virginia Council on Economic Education or known as VCEE by many and our mission is simple: to provide Virginia’s K-12 students with the economic knowledge and financial skills needed to thrive in our dynamic economy. VCEE was established as a nonprofit in 1970 to leverage the collective intelligence, resources, and spirit of state government, local school divisions, universities, business leaders and classroom educators to ensure Virginia’s 1.2 million K-12 students graduate economically and financially confident. Today, VCEE resources are available in every school division across the Commonwealth.
VCEE provides quality professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers to assist them in teaching economics and personal finance. With the support of donors and partners like you, VCEE institutes and workshops are provided at no cost to teachers or school divisions.

On July 1st, we welcomed Kate Scott as VCEE’s new Vice President of Programs. You may know that Kate previously served as the associate director of the Center for Economic Education at George Mason University, one of VCEE’s nine affiliated centers. In that role, over the last four years, Kate effectively supported educators in the state’s most populated region, and she was an active member of the VCEE Network, oftentimes leading the development and delivery of a broad array of professional development programs and contributing to a more economically and financially literate region. In addition, Kate served on the VCEE Board of Directors as the Network representative. Kate has also served on the boards of the Council for Economic Education (CEE), our national affiliate, and the National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE).
Kate brings to her new role both experience as a classroom educator and business experience, in addition to her experience at the GMU Center. Before coming to George Mason, Kate was a high school teacher in Mississippi, teaching business, management and administration. During the summers, she participated in a program with the Mississippi Council on Economic Education in which she taught entrepreneurship to other teachers. Prior to entering the field of education, Kate held several positions while working for three different businesses.
Kate holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration-Small Business & Entrepreneurship Emphasis from the University of Southern Mississippi and, from William Carey University, a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Education. She has also earned several professional certifications, including the W!SE Personal Finance Certification for Educators.
